Sinn Féin: No charges over 'forged' election signatures claim

A police investigation into allegations that fake signatures were used on nomination papers for Sinn Féin election candidate Gerard Magee has resulted in no prosecutions. The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) said that the “available evidence was insufficient to provide a reasonable prospect of conviction”. Three people were reported to the PPS, but none of them were Magee.

Magee, who stood for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in 2023, was an unsuccessful candidate for Sinn Féin in the Ballyclare area. These claims were cited in parliament by Democratic Unionist Party MP Jim Shannon, who noted that a proposer of Magee’s had been the victim of identity fraud.

The council sought guidance from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, which recommended that police should investigate. A file was submitted to the PPS in April 2024, leading to its decision not to prosecute any of the three people it reported on.

Sinn Féin was approached for comment, but the party and Magee have made no response. Sinn Féin has previously stated that nominations in the Ballyclare area were in compliance with Electoral Office regulations
