UN facilities in Gaza may have been used to hold hostages by Hamas, according to freed prisoner Emily Damari. The British-Israeli hostage, who was held captive by Hamas in Gaza for 15 months before being released, made the claim during a phone call with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Damari also claimed that she was shot in the hand and leg, and that her captors refused to give her medical treatment during her time in captivity. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has said the allegations are “very serious” and called for independent investigations.
Unrwa has been a regular target of Israeli accusations of involvement in Hamas terrorist activities. The Israeli government has plans to ban Unrwa from operating, and accuses personnel from the organisation of being involved in attacks. Unrwa director of communications Juliette Touma noted that “for many, many months we did not have access to several of our facilities”. Most of the buildings were turned into shelters during the Gaza conflict, with more than a million people in those buildings at one point.
During her captivity, Damari claimed she was only given a bottle of out-of-date iodine to treat gunshot wounds sustained in her leg and finger. The issue of medical treatment for hostages had previously been raised by the hostages’ families, who had accused the Israeli authorities of refusing to provide medical treatment for their captors. A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas was agreed last week; it will see the gradual release of hostages, in exchange for Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons.
