Newly published emails in court documents show that Prince Andrew had contact with US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein beyond what he had previously acknowledged. The emails reveal that the Duke of York sent Epstein an email in February 2011 saying, “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!!!!” The email was one of several exchanged between the royal and the convicted sex offender. Previously, Prince Andrew had claimed that he did not see or speak to Epstein after visiting him in New York in December 2010.
The emails were disclosed during a court case relating to the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and banker Jes Staley. The FCA has banned Staley from holding senior positions in the financial services industry following claims that he had not fully disclosed his relationship with Epstein. Staley has appealed the FCA’s decision. However, the regulator’s evidence of his contact with Epstein has also exposed emails between the convicted sex offender and the “member of the British Royal Family.”
The tone of the email exchanges between the royal and Epstein was friendly and familiar. In June 2010, Epstein emailed to ask, “If you can find time to show jes around with vera that would be fun.. he told me he ran into you tonight…” A few days later, a response was sent by the “member of the British Royal Family,” asking who Vera was, and Epstein replied saying, “my future ex wife, I know jes and she would love to see home,” and a dinner was arranged.
Prince Andrew had been asked about the extent of his association with Epstein in a Newsnight interview. He replied that he had ceased contact with Epstein in 2006, after learning that the financier was under investigation. Later, a photograph emerged of Prince Andrew and Epstein walking together in New York’s Central Park in December 2010, when the prince stayed at Epstein’s home. The prince repeatedly denied seeing or speaking to Epstein again, but the newly revealed emails indicate otherwise.
Prince Andrew is said to have first met Epstein in 1999 when introduced by their mutual friend, Ghislaine Maxwell. In 2000, Epstein and Maxwell were guests at a party at Windsor Castle. Later that same year, Prince Andrew hosted a birthday party for Maxwell at Sandringham, with Epstein in attendance. The relationship continued, with Epstein attending another Windsor Castle party in July 2006. After this party, Prince Andrew claimed that he broke off contact with Epstein until their December 2010 meeting. Epstein was later arrested on charges of the sex trafficking of minors and died in prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial. In November 2019, Prince Andrew gave an interview to Newsnight in which he discussed his relationship with Epstein and the fallout resulted in him withdrawing from royal duties. His office has not yet released any comment regarding the emails
