The UK government has said that Brexit has had some benefits on the fifth anniversary of the country’s exit from the European Union. A spokesperson for No 10 pointed out that freedom from EU regulations has helped to make the UK a more competitive financial hub. Sir Keir Starmer is due to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and attend a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels next Monday.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued that Brexit was “the greatest vote of confidence in our country”, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called the campaign a success constitutionally and in terms of foreign policy, but admitted that many who voted for Brexit felt it had been a huge disappointment. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, used the anniversary to renew his call for a UK-EU customs union deal, while Green MP Ellie Chowns called for the UK to rejoin the customs union, claiming that “full membership of the EU remains the best option for the UK
