Natalie Cassidy to leave EastEnders, three decades after first appearance as Sonia Fowler

Sonia Fowler, played by actress Natalie Cassidy, will be leaving EastEnders after more than three decades on the show. In a statement, Cassidy expressed her emotions, stating that while she is “extremely sad,” she is also excited to move on. The BBC has noted that Cassidy’s final scenes will air around the soap’s 40th anniversary in February, although her exit storyline has yet to be confirmed. Additionally, EastEnders will broadcast a live episode on 20 February, which will feature a plot outcome that viewers can determine.

Cassidy has been a part of EastEnders for over 31 years, having made her debut in the show in 1993. She left the show in 2007, made a brief return between 2010 and 2011 and then returned to Walford in 2014. Sonia is currently pregnant with the baby of Reiss Colwell, who murdered his former wife Debbie, a crime Sonia was charged with, but a later video surfaced of her half-sister Bianca Butcher admitting to the crime.

During her long stint on the soap, Cassidy was involved in some of EastEnders’ most famous storylines, including her teenage pregnancy and being bullied by her friend Clare Bates. Moreover, Cassidy’s horn playing was a recurring theme, and it proved to be a source of irritation for both her family and neighbours. The executive producer of EastEnders, Chris Clenshaw, stated that Cassidy has been involved in some of the show’s most “iconic and explosive storylines.” He added that while he won’t reveal the specifics about her exit, she “will take a central role in the 40th anniversary storylines in a week of truly unmissable drama that will change the lives of those in Walford forever.”

Sonia and Cassidy have garnered a devoted fan base during their long time on EastEnders. Her final scenes will undoubtedly leave viewers emotional, and the show’s 40th anniversary may be the perfect sendoff for both Sonia and Cassidy.
