A bereaved daughter has spoken out about the substandard care her mother received at Bothwell Castle Care Home in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, leading to a £10,000 payout. Linda Watson took legal action after her 93-year-old mother, Ellen Watson, died, 13 months after moving into the facility in June 2020, during the pandemic. Linda Watson was distressed to learn that her mother was considered “at risk of neglect” in the weeks before her death and went without end-of-life medication for 14 hours. After Ellen’s passing, district nurses visiting the home filled in an adult support and protection referral.
The Care Inspectorate upheld three out of Linda’s six complaints, including that her mother did not receive palliative care and support in line with best practice and standards. Linda had supplied photos of her mother with her eyes crusted and her tongue coated and dry. She noted that her mother was receiving inadequate nutritional intake and did not receive regular fluid advice. The investigation found that the service failed to respond appropriately when her family raised concerns about her palliative care.
Bothwell Castle Care Home apologised to Ms Watson and said her mother’s end-of-life care “fell short of our usual high standards”. The Care Inspectorate’s most recent inspection, in January 2024, judged the home to be “very good or good” across all areas of care and noted that the required areas for improvement had been met. A spokesperson for the home reiterated that the facility “strongly refute[d] the allegation that the care provided to Ellen Watson was ‘horrific’”.
Linda Watson hopes that by speaking out, “somebody somewhere” takes action to ensure high standards in care homes are maintained. The Scottish government recorded an estimated 41,569 adult support and protection referrals in Scotland in 2021/22, with 18% of those investigated occurring in care homes. Exhaustive internal and external investigations followed Mrs Watson’s complaint against the nursing home
