Thousands of properties across Northern Ireland are still without power a week after Storm Éowyn hit the region. At its peak, 30% of all premises in Northern Ireland were disconnected from the grid. As of Thursday, approximately 8,000 properties remained without power. Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has added 70 specialists from Great Britain to the 300 engineers who have been working since the storm passed through. The company has opened 11 Community Assistance Centres and more than 60 drop-in centres to provide facilities such as food, hot drinks, showers and workspaces.
Former Northern Ireland MP Francie Molloy has been without electricity since Friday and criticised the power provider. Molloy said that customers had been “failed” and argued that “a company like NIE should be prepared”. He also suggested that politicians had not been vocal enough in response to the electrical outages. Molloy warned that he expected to be without power for 10 days.
In the Republic of Ireland, 76,000 customers are still without power, down from a peak of 768,000. One man died when a tree fell on his car during the storm. The highest gusts in Northern Ireland occurred during Storm Éowyn, reaching their strongest levels in 27 years.
