Marianne Faithfull: Singer and actress dies at 78

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has passed away at age 78, as confirmed by her spokesperson. Faithfull was known for her music career, including hits like “As Tears Go By” and her starring roles in films such as “The Girl on a Motorcycle.” She was also once the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 1960s and inspired songs like “Wild Horses” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” After struggling with heroin addiction in the 1970s, she revived her career with the classic album “Broken English.”

Faithfull’s spokesperson shared the news of her passing in a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.” Faithfull had suffered from multiple health problems throughout her life, including bulimia, breast cancer, and emphysema caused by her smoking. In 2020, she contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized for 22 days but made a recovery.

Faithfull’s story is a “remarkable portrait of the rock and roll era.” She was plucked from obscurity by the Rolling Stones’ manager at the age of 16 and given the first song ever written by Jagger and Richards, “As Tears Go By.” Her version of the song became an international hit, and she became part of the “British Invasion” of the US pop charts. During this time, her affair with Jagger made her a tabloid lightning rod, and her drug addiction caused her to live homeless on the streets of Soho at one point.

Despite her struggles, Faithfull re-emerged with the 1976 album “Dreamin’ My Dreams” and gained success with her 1979 album “Broken English,” which showcased the ashen voice and hard-won wisdom that defined the second act of her career. Faithfull collaborated with several artists throughout her career, including PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. She was also an accomplished actress and received awards for her work. Faithfull is survived by her son, Nicholas Dunbar
