Cardiff Parkway station approved by Welsh government

A new mainline railway station, the Cardiff Parkway, has been approved for construction in the eastern part of the Welsh capital by First Minister Eluned Morgan. The project includes a railway station with four platforms and a business park and is being led by Cardiff Parkway Developments in the St Mellons area. The developers had been waiting for a decision from the Welsh government after the initial planning application in October 2022. The project has been dogged by delays, with the developers planning for the station to be in operation by 2024.

In April 2022, the plans were approved by Cardiff council, but the review by the Welsh government was necessary due to the broader national interest in the project. Despite the criticism from council leader Huw Thomas, the Welsh government has given the go-ahead for the project. The Welsh government holds a minority stake in the project, while Investec and the Roberts family have a majority share.

The CF3 postcode area on the east of the city, where St. Mellons, Rumney, Trowbridge and Llanrumney are situated, has more than 40,000 residents. The area has faced long travel times to Cardiff city centre in the past, which could be reduced significantly by train services. Journey times could potentially be reduced to seven minutes, in stark contrast to the current bus journeys that can take up to an hour.

Cardiff Council leader Huw Thomas said, “This project will help tackle traffic congestion from the east of Cardiff providing a game-changing public transport option for a part of the city which has suffered for far too long with connection issues. With journey times between Cardiff and Newport reduced to just seven minutes, more than 800,000 passengers a year could benefit once this is up and running.” Thomas has also emphasized the positive impact this project could have on the environment and people’s health by promoting sustainable transport options such as cycle paths and walking routes.

Cardiff is already home to 20 train stations, but none of them are located in the eastern part of the city. The introduction of Cardiff Parkway will not only reduce travel times for residents in the east but also improve the city’s transport infrastructure and stimulate growth
