Wynne Evans to take time out of Strictly live tour

Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans has announced that he will be taking time off from the show’s live tour as well as his other “public commitments”. The Welsh tenor cited his wellbeing as the reason for the break, which came just days after he apologised for an “inappropriate and unacceptable” comment he made at the tour’s launch event. The incident was reported by The Mail on Sunday, which claimed that Evans had made a sexualised remark as the dancers prepared for a group photo. The BBC had already confirmed that the singer would be taking time off from his Radio Wales show.

“I’ve agreed with the BBC that I’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing,” Evans said in a statement. “I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. Apologies to those I won’t get to see at the remaining performances and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.” The BBC has not yet commented on the situation.

Evans is currently part of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour and has made headlines for his performance with dance partner Katya Jones. During the TV series, the two also attracted attention from viewers over what some described as awkward incidents. These included Jones appearing to reject a high-five from Evans and moving his hand away from her waist during an episode in October. While the duo dismissed the claims as “complete nonsense”, the moment still made an impact on viewers.

This is not the first time that Strictly has found itself embroiled in scandal. Last year, professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima left the show after allegations emerged about their behaviour towards their celebrity partners. The BBC apologised to actress Amanda Abbington over Pernice’s behaviour and upheld claims of verbal bullying and harassment. In response, new welfare measures were introduced for Strictly in 2020, including chaperones in all rehearsal rooms and additional training for the professional dancers and production team.

Despite Evans’ absence from the Strictly tour, a new BBC show featuring the star, entitled Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, has still gone ahead as planned
