Coventry couple recall how random text ended in happily ever after

Donovan Shears was just 18 when he was given his first mobile phone. After discovering text messaging, he decided to send a message to a random phone number. Little did he know, it would change the course of his life.

Kirsty responded to the message, and the two started getting to know each other through the day. It began with a simple “hello”, but it was enough to spark their relationship that would go on for more than 20 years.

Out of all of the messages Donovan sent to random numbers from the Coventry pub he was working at that night, Kirsty was the only one to reply. Four years after that first message, the couple exchanged vows in Scotland, where Kirsty is from, and now have two children together.

Donovan recalls sending out multiple messages to random numbers, but the only person who replied was Kirsty. The two would text frequently throughout the day, and after developing feelings for each other, they finally met up six months after the first message was sent.

Their relationship continued to grow, and Donovan said, “She’s my best friend as well as my wife.” More than 20 years later, the couple will be renewing their vows at Coventry Cathedral on Valentine’s Day. They are excited to celebrate the day with their children, who are looking forward to the occasion.

The Shears’ love story is one of chance and fate, as sending a message to a random number changed their lives forever. It is a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected things in life can lead us to our greatest joys
