John Panayis, a 91-year-old man who has spent more than 60 years in the food industry, still works in a fish and chip shop five days a week because he “didn’t like” being retired. He currently works six to seven hours a day at Nick’s Plaice fish bar in Kingsley, Northamptonshire, and attributes his youthful looks to staying active. Mr Panayis opened the shop in 2009 before passing the business on to his son five years ago. He believes that working and being around people keep his mind active and sharp.
Originally from Cyprus, Mr Panayis moved to Northampton in the 1950s. Throughout his career, he built various food businesses in the area, including the town’s first French restaurant and a coffee shop. He also owned a nightclub. Reflecting on his long career, Mr Panayis stated that he was thankful and grateful for the support of the local community: “They have supported me and my family very well.”
According to his son-in-law, Stewart Wright, who owns Nuovo restaurant in Northampton, Mr Panayis epitomises the hospitality industry and the work ethic. He noted that Mr Panayis loves to keep busy and that for him, it’s a way of life. The combination of hard work and customer service is what keeps him going, rather than business. When asked about the secret to his longevity, Mr Panayis jokingly said, “Perhaps some wine and the right diet.”
Even though he still works at the fish and chip shop, John Panayis is grateful for his family’s support, the community’s support, and the opportunities that have led him to a long and successful career in the food industry
