Manchester United’s Europa League match against Rangers saw 39 arrests due to trouble before the game. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to reports of disorder on Great Ancoats Street following the arrival of thousands of Rangers fans in the city. The match kicked off at Old Trafford at 20:00 GMT.
Manchester United released a statement saying they took “the strictest possible measures” to prevent away fans from getting tickets for home areas in the ground. This came after videos of violence in the stands were shared online. Tickets were only allocated to those already on the club’s database when the draw was made in August, according to a Manchester United spokesperson, with the same restrictions applying to tickets forwarded by season ticket holders and members.
Glasgow-based Rangers brought about 4,000 fans to support the club at Old Trafford, and all examples of away fans in home areas will be investigated over the coming days, said the spokesman. The strongest possible sanctions will be taken against the registered holders.
Twenty-six of the arrests came from the disorder in Ancoats, where police escorted fans through the city centre. Pictures and videos showed crowds of fans dressed in black with blue face coverings flanked by officers marching through Exchange Square.
The match between Manchester United and Rangers ended with a score of 2-1
