The far right is known for piggybacking on legitimate concerns, according to the former government minister Lee Waters. During a protest in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, in 2023, Waters alleges that vulnerable constituents were targeted to push a “race agenda.” This is a tactic that the far-right repeatedly uses to put themselves at the center of genuine grievances, he said. The former government adviser on terrorism law is now urging the police and Crown Prosecution Service to investigate the activities of far-right activists.
The UK government’s plans to temporarily house asylum seekers in the Stradey Park Hotel sparked 100 days of protests, including those led by Patriotic Alternative. The group has since drawn criticism following an undercover BBC investigation that captured its members’ extreme views and plans. PA has defended its “peaceful” campaigns for the rights of “indigenous British people,” but its activities have led to calls for it to be disbanded.
Some individuals affiliated with PA have said they plan to obtain arms and guns. Political and legal figures are urging the police to treat the group as violent criminals inciting others. Lord Carlile, the UK’s former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, has called for Patriotic Alternative to be the subject of a police inquiry and a charging decision by the director of public prosecutions.
Former counter-extremism commissioner Dame Sara Khan, meanwhile, is calling on the UK government to urgently ban groups like Patriotic Alternative that incite hate. According to Khan, British society cannot tolerate extremist groups that promote violence or incite violent crime against immigrants. Discussions about banning such groups are ongoing.
