Allison Angell, the first person in the UK to have had four major organs replaced, has died at the age of 46. She had spent ten years receiving the organs – a liver, heart, lungs and a kidney from her father David – before dedicating her time to supporting others with cystic fibrosis and advocating for organ donation reform. Her father described her as strong from the start and her mother remembered her as a positive woman who didn’t like to ask for help.
Angell was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was six weeks old and received her first transplant aged 17 while studying for her A-levels. She became a GP and won a Pride of Britain award in 2010 for her work. She also spoke to lawmakers, including both the Welsh assembly and Westminster, in support of presumed consent for organ donation. Wales became the first UK nation to pass the law in 2015.
David Hamilton received Allison’s heart during her second transplant, which was the result of surgery that replaced both her heart and lungs. Hamilton remained a family friend until his death 16 years later and attended her 2001 wedding to her husband, Nathan Angell
