Jarlath Burns, the president of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), has stated that he will not retract the content of his email to Naas GAA, regarding Rory Gallagher’s coaching role. Gallagher had earlier accused Burns of derailing his career and threatened to take legal action if the accusations were not withdrawn. Gallagher, the former Derry football manager, was offered a coaching role with Naas, which was subsequently withdrawn after the appointment details were made public. Burns had contacted the club to register his opposition to the potential appointment.
Gallagher had stepped down as Derry manager in 2023 after abuse allegations were made by his estranged wife, Nicola Gallagher. However, he has denied the accusations and stated that no charges were brought as a result of investigations. Speaking to RTE’s Late Late Show, Burns said that he was motivated to write the email to Naas by GAA’s Game Changer initiative, which is designed to challenge social and cultural norms that contribute towards domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence. Burns emphasised that it was up to Naas to decide whether or not to proceed with the appointment.
Burns hoped that there would be no legal action taken but stated that he would not retract the contents of the email sent in good faith. Burns has clarified that the GAA is not interested in cancel culture and has advised Gallagher that there is a way back for him. Gallagher has previously demanded that the accusations be withdrawn so that he can continue working as a manager free from irreparable harm.
