Lowest temperature of -14.5C in Altnaharra on winter's coldest night


Scotland experienced a particularly cold night on Friday as temperatures in Altnaharra dipped down to -17.3C. This marked the most frigid January night in 15 years within the UK, since 2010 when various regions had lows below -15C. Although the Met Office did not anticipate levels dropping below -18C, there remained a slight possibility of hitting -19C.

For perspective, Altnaharra experienced -14.5C just the night prior. Approximately 50 schools were closed across the Highlands, with 13 additional closures in Aberdeenshire. Students in Moray, Shetland, and the Outer Hebrides also missed classes because of the extreme weather.

The cold snap is projected to continue over the course of the weekend with mean temperatures in Scotland ranging from -2C to -5C. Landscapes in the Highlands might even reach lows of -14C or -15C. The cold front is expected to considerably weaken by Monday.

Scottish Water stated that it has observed a 30% surge in pipe bursts across its water mains, as well as commercial and residential pipes, throughout the country. This trend is anticipated to persist into next week. Scottish Water stated that it is managing the situation and has personnel on hand to repair pipeline disruptions
