The Metropolitan Police’s Black Police Association (MBPA) head, Insp Charles Ehikioya, has been fired because of “gross misconduct”. He was part of a WhatsApp group chat with former police officer Carlo Francisco in which sexist, racist and otherwise inappropriate messages were exchanged. Insp Ehikioya denied the allegations against him, claiming that they were falsely attributed because of his race, or his role as chair of the MBPA. A panel had to hear the evidence and found that his conduct was a gross breach of the standards of professional behaviour.
The panel, which was headed by Cdr Jason Prins, found that Insp Ehikioya’s behaviour in the chat breached standards concerning equality and diversity, discreditable conduct, and the challenging and reporting of improper conduct. After a break to weigh the decision, Cdr Prins said that the appropriate and proportionate penalty was dismissal without notice.
The officer had received and sent over 7,000 messages between 2017 and 2020,
