The Scottish police are investigating the release of two lynx in the Drumguish area in the Highlands. The animals were spotted walking through the snow by members of the public. The Highland Wildlife Park, which is home to lynx, has been assisting police with the search. The Cairngorms National Park Authority has warned the public not to approach the wild cats.
Lynx, which have distinctive black-tipped ears and speckled brown coats, were once native to Britain, but were driven to extinction 500 to 1,000 years ago. Some conservation groups have been calling for them to be reintroduced in Scotland. The Lynx to Scotland group, a partnership of three conservation charities, is working on a project to reinstate lynx in the Scottish Highlands. Peter Cairns, executive director of Scotland: The Big Picture, one of the charities involved, condemned the illegal release of animals.
While some farmers are opposed to the reintroduction of lynx because of concern for their livestock, other conservationists are worried that the lynx may not survive in the wild. Experts have said that the fact that the animals have been seen several times could suggest that they are too domesticated to fend for themselves
