Jess Phillips, the UK’s safeguarding minister, has stated that disinformation spread by Elon Musk has been endangering her and that the experience has been very tiring. The billionaire tech entrepreneur and adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump has called Phillips a “rape genocide apologist” and called for her to be jailed. Phillips defended the government’s decision not to hold a national inquiry into grooming gangs in response to criticisms from Musk.
Musk’s social media posts followed Phillips’ rejection of a request for the government to lead a public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham. Instead, Phillips has called for local inquiries to be implemented, as she believes they are more effective at achieving change. She added that she had seen “change happen” as a result of inquiries held at the local level, such as the one conducted in Telford.
Phillips remarked that the threat to her safety has gone up since Musk’s social media intervention. Nevertheless, she is “resigned to the lot in life that you get as a woman who fights violence against women and girls.” She stated that she is no stranger to people without expertise attempting to silence her.
Speaking about Musk’s comments, Phillips said that they were “ridiculous” and that they would be worth it if they resulted in actual change. The debate surrounding Phillips’ recent decision has been ongoing and has sparked controversy, as the practice of grooming gangs and its effect on society continues to be a topic of considerable public concern
