Daniel Andreas San Diego, an American fugitive who was on the run for 21 years, has had his UK bank accounts frozen by a court. San Diego was arrested in rural Wales and appeared before Llandudno Magistrates’ Court on a video link from HMP Belmarsh in London. Police requested a 12-month account-freezing order for money held in his accounts pending further inquiries. A police financial investigator said the three accounts held more than £20,000 and were in the name of Danny Webb, now identified as Mr San Diego.
District judge Gwyn Jones granted the police’s application for an account freezing order. San Diego is currently awaiting extradition to the United States, where he is wanted by the FBI for allegedly bombing two office buildings in San Francisco in 2003. The FBI describes San Diego as an “animal rights extremist”.
He was arrested by the National Crime Agency and North Wales Police at a house in Maenan, Conwy, near Llanrwst where he is believed to have lived under a false identity for a number of years. San Diego faces charges of bombing two corporations in a premeditated attack.
San Diego seemed to enjoy a rather quiet life in Llanrwst, which is situated in a small but beautiful area of North Wales. He might have been on the run for 21 years, though he did well to keep his true identity hidden from his colleagues, friends and neighbours. Although he is unlikely to be able to access his accounts now, the exact same question looms over San Diego? Where will he be extradited to next, and will he serve out his prison sentence in the United States?
