Horsham: Woman had eight organs removed in rare cancer treatment

Faye Louise, a flight dispatcher from Horsham, West Sussex, has made an incredible recovery after undergoing a series of surgeries to remove eight organs affected by pseudomyxoma peritonei, a rare tumour caused by a build-up of jelly-like substance in the abdomen. Doctors found a tumour in her appendix in 2023 having originally diagnosed her with an ovarian cyst. After a series of surgeries, the former model is now officially cancer-free and has returned to work amid accolades for her charitable efforts in fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

During an interview with BBC Radio Sussex, Ms Louise revealed that this time last year, she was unsure about whether or not she would ever be able to return to work again, citing concerns over the job’s physicality. However, despite the challenges she faced, including multiple rounds of surgery and an exhausting recovery period, Ms Louise proved to have the resilience and determination to overcome her illness, making an amazing recovery.

Ms Louise underwent her first operation to rectify an ovarian cyst causing her immense pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, she later received the devastating news that she had been diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei, meaning she required a series of further surgeries to remove various organs, including her spleen, gallbladder, appendix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, belly button, greater and lesser omentum, part of her liver, and sections of her diaphragm and pelvis. These surgeries would leave Ms Louise with life-long scars, including a heavily scarred midriff from her belly button to her pubic bone.

Despite the immense difficulties she faced, Ms Louise is a shining example of strength and resilience. She was able to return to work and even fundraised for Cancer Research UK, completing the Race for Life in Stanmer Park, Brighton, and gunged with 15 litres of orange gloop as part of her efforts to raise funds for the charity. Ms Louise will undergo yearly scans every November as a precautionary measure, but her outlook on life is impressively positive
