Amy Dowden, a professional dancer on the UK television show Strictly Come Dancing, has revealed that she has frozen five embryos after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. Dowden, who is 34 years old, stated that she would like to start a family with her husband Ben Jones in the future. Her egg retrieval procedure was conducted prior to undertaking cancer treatment.
Dowden disclosed in February 2024 that she had been cleared of cancer following an operation and treatment, and she later partnered with singer JB Gill on Strictly Come Dancing. Unfortunately, an injury subsequently caused her to withdraw from the competition. Speaking on the What If? podcast with Lorraine Kelly and her daughter Rosie, the dancer said, “we would love a family and we’ve got embryos because, obviously, I’ve got a hormone-fed cancer so I was put into menopause, which happened the day I started chemo. So in a couple of years, when they feel it’s safe, hopefully, we’ll have the opportunity”.
Dowden added that the last year had been a “rollercoaster” for her loved ones, and described the experience of her mother watching her students dance: “Last year, I said to you we were going to come and watch and to be honest with you, the fact you’re still here is everything”.
Her experience with fertility treatment was detailed in the BBC documentary Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, and she will be performing on the upcoming Strictly Come Dancing tour with Gill
