Baby dies after Grantham A1 crash in icy conditions


A baby boy has died following a car accident on the A1. The seven-month-old, who has not been named, suffered serious injuries when the Honda Jazz he was travelling in left the dual carriageway and hit a tree near Grantham, Lincolnshire on Thursday. The woman who was also in the vehicle was hospitalised with serious injuries. Two other people travelling in the car were not seriously harmed in the accident.

The police have closed the southbound carriageway of the A1 whilst the crash is being investigated. Police have not disclosed the cause of the accident, but it is believed that the incident could be linked to the hazardous icy roads in the area. The accident happened when the temperature was around -2C (28F) according to the Met Office.

The family of the child are being supported by specially trained police officers. Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP for Rutland and Stamford, offered her condolences to the family and loved ones of the baby boy. She called the incident “heartbreaking” and went on to add that her, “heart goes out to family and loved ones at this impossible time”.

Lincolnshire Police urged anyone who may have any information to come forward and contact them immediately. They are also appealing to those who may have been driving in the area at the time of the incident or over the past few days to come forward.
