UK households have been hit by a £70 increase in energy bills as the price cap rose from the start of 2022, according to the Daily Telegraph. Experts have warned that a further increase in April will make it even harder for families to keep up with payments for their electricity and gas. Meanwhile, private schools are defying the Treasury by planning to raise fees by more than the expected amount as the planned VAT increase takes effect, the newspaper reports.
The Daily Mail has accused the government of breaking an election promise to lower energy bills. The paper said that the increase comes after Sir Keir Starmer promised to put “more cash in your pocket” during his New Year’s message. Campaigners have warned that pensioners who no longer qualify for winter fuel payments could see their energy bills rise by £500, according to the Daily Express.
The Times reports on a YouGov poll commissioned by the paper which reveals that voters believe Labour will fail to meet its own targets. However, it also carries Sir Keir’s own New Year’s message, which said that 2025 would be about “rediscovering the great nation that we are”. Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reported on the Prime Minister’s plans to have the nation come together for a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
