EastEnders: Ross Kemp to return as Grant Mitchell for soap's 40th anniversary

British actor Ross Kemp is set to reprise his role as Grant Mitchell in EastEnders as the soap opera approaches its 40th anniversary. Kemp’s character first appeared in the long-running show in 1990 and was last seen on screen in 2016. Producers say he will return for a short stint in the new year, and while details of his storyline are yet to be revealed, it is certain to be a drama-filled appearance for the beloved character.

Kemp expressed his delight at returning to the show that has had such a significant impact on his career and life, stating “EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary is an absolute honour”.

While Grant has been living in Portugal in his absence, his brother Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has been struggling, and his estranged best friend, Nigel, has returned to the square. To add more layering to the plot, Grant’s ex-wife Sharon is now romantically involved with his long-lost cousin, Teddy Mitchell.

EastEnders Executive Producer, Chris Clenshaw, expressed his excitement at welcoming back the legendary role, describing Kemp’s return as a significant part of the show’s anniversary. He revealed that Grant’s return will make up many moments of genuinely unmissable TV.

Kemp has made a name for himself presenting documentaries in recent years, often focusing on dangerous people and places. Aside from presenting, he has also hosted the hit daytime game show Bridge of Lies. Kemp’s return follows Paul Bradley’s return as Nigel Bates, who rejoined the show over the festive season, and Tracy-Ann Oberman’s re-appearance as Chrissie Watts after nearly two decades away from the series
