DJ Spoony thanks 'amazing' NHS after brain operation

DJ Spoony, whose real name is Johnathan Joseph, has publicly thanked the National Health Service (NHS) and his family after being treated for a “small bleed to the brain”. The BBC Radio 2 presenter revealed on air that he had been experiencing headaches for several weeks but had “put off” seeing a doctor until he decided to go to accident and emergency on December 21. He was subsequently diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, a condition where there is bleeding in the brain.

At Bedford Hospital, Spoony underwent tests and a CT scan before being referred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to see a specialist. He was notified that an operation would be required and remained in the hospital over Christmas Day. After a successful operation by “amazing doctors and nurses,” the 54-year-old DJ took to Instagram to express his gratitude: “Thank you to everybody at Addenbrooke’s for looking after me; you were amazing. So, again our amazing National Health Service.”

Spoony, who was previously awarded a British Empire Medal in 2022 for his musical contributions to charities throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, reflected on the sadness of spending Christmas near individuals who did not have loved ones to share the festive period with. Despite this, he felt “incredibly grateful” to be heading home to his support network of family and friends.

Despite the seriousness of Spoony’s diagnosis, the presenter remained optimistic throughout his ordeal. “I was feeling fine, 10 minutes after the operation. I was talking, looking forward to being back on the ward, eating a banana, and having a ginger shot,” he said. His bravery during the difficult time has earned him widespread admiration, with many fans of the popular DJ taking to social media to offer their well wishes and support
