Following the death of former US President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100, there have been numerous tributes paid to the Nobel laureate. Both President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump released statements in which they praised Carter’s achievements both as a politician and subsequently as a humanitarian. Biden described Carter as a “man of principle, faith and humility”, while Trump stated that all Americans owed Carter a “debt of gratitude”. Despite having only served one four-year term in office and leaving with low approval ratings, Carter was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
Leaders from around the world have also spoken of Carter’s remarkable life and achievements. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the former president’s commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad. French President Emmanuel Macron described him as a “steadfast advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable”, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of Carter’s steadfast support for Ukraine in its struggle for independence.
Carter’s presidency was blighted by a number of economic and foreign policy challenges, including the Iran hostage crisis, but he also successfully helped broker the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. After leaving the White House, he founded the Carter Center to promote global diplomacy and human rights. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work with the foundation, and teamed up with Nelson Mandela to found The Elders, a group of global leaders working on peace and human rights.
Carter is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023, following 77 years of marriage that had seen her support him throughout his career and life. Carter’s son Chip called his father “a hero” who had brought people together through his work and beliefs.
