Gavin and Stacey Christmas special: Did Smithy say yes to Nessa?

After 10 years of waiting, the final episode of Gavin and Stacey has finally aired, and fans finally know whether Smithy said yes to Nessa. The 2019 Christmas special had ended with a cliffhanger, when Nessa got down on one knee and proposed to Smithy. However, in the finale, it was revealed that Smithy didn’t say yes to Nessa, or anything at all. Instead, he agreed to marry Sonia, his girlfriend (now fiancée) played by Laura Aikman. Co-creator James Corden said, “I wonder if we could trick everybody into thinking….that they’re just going to watch a wedding that’s between Nessa and Smithy,” and that’s exactly what he did.

The cast also opened up about the mystery of what happened on the fishing trip. The incident that happened between Uncle Bryn and Jason many years ago has remained a long-running gag that has never been revealed. In the finale, there was a scene where Dave Coaches almost blurted out what happened but stopped short. He said, “He will take that to his grave… It’s a great running gag that they created – I love that. It’s just very fitting that nothing will ever be revealed.”

Furthermore, Gwen revealed she had a boyfriend, and it was eventually revealed to be Dave Coaches, much to the surprise of all, even the cast. They ended up looking great together and providing each other with the excitement they needed.

Of course, the finale revealed that eventually, Nessa and Smithy did get back together. Smithy left Sonia at the altar and ran to Southampton docks to propose to Nessa. After much delay and drama, Smithy finally got down on one knee and proposed to Nessa, to which she eventually said yes. The episode ended with the reception at the pub, which Jones thought felt like a real wedding.

The finale was watched by 12.3 million people on BBC One, making it the biggest non-sports overnight of 2024, only behind Wallace and Gromit. The last Christmas special was watched live by 11.6 million viewers and had grown up to 18.4 million on iPlayer. Fans can now watch the final episode on BBC iPlayer
