Hardy Suffolk swimmers enjoy a Christmas Day dip

Braving the freezing temperatures of the North Sea, hundreds of people took part in fundraising festive swims across Suffolk on Christmas Day. The dippers, many in fancy dress, plunged into the sea off the coast of Felixstowe and Lowestoft to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice and local charities. Organisers said more than 650 people participated in Felixstowe’s 20th anniversary swim, making it the largest turnout ever.

Meanwhile, Everyone Active’s Lowestoft swim marked its 45th anniversary and aimed to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. Donna Taylor, the general manager of Waterlane Leisure Centre, said it was fantastic to play a part in the community event. She praised both the participants and supporters for creating a friendly atmosphere.

James Fox-Golding, of St Elizabeth Hospice, thanked the record number of participants who braved the chill for the hospice. The annual event in Southwold also drew in a large number of swimmers, who all received a medal. Since 2012, the Southwold swim has raised more than £38,000 for local charities.

Fancy dress outfits included Father Christmas costumes and penguin costumes with tinsel, while volunteers ensured the event went smoothly. The dips were a great way to get people of all ages active and charitable over Christmas
