Fleet's 'pants' Christmas lights sparking joy

Residents in Fleet, Hampshire have been tickled by the Christmas lights strung across High Street by the town council, which have been likened to underwear on a washing line by some. Designed by the council to resemble lanterns, the lights brought some “unexpected humour” to the community, the council revealed in a statement. Despite the ribbing on social media, the council is said to have received many messages of appreciation for their efforts to brighten up the high street and create a welcoming environment.

Rita Tong, executive officer of Fleet Town Council, commented: “Mostly, people and organisations have made an effort to reach out and say they are appreciative that the council puts on the lights.” She added that one resident had written that “you have to dry your underwear somewhere”, making light of the situation.

The council’s statement said: “Whether you see them as pants, lanterns or simply modern lighting we’re delighted to hear our streetlights are sparking joy, conversation and unexpected humour in the community. Our goal has always been to brighten Fleet High Street and create a welcoming environment. It’s wonderful to know they’re bringing a smile to your night and day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations. We value your feedback and the light-hearted moments it brings to our neighbourhood.”

Although some have been critical of the display, most residents seem to find it amusing, and many children have been captivated by the colourful shapes strung above them. With Christmas approaching, it appears that Fleet’s Christmas lights may put a smile on the faces of many this year.

In the meantime, be they “pants” or “lanterns”, the illuminations have certainly put the Hampshire town on the map, with many tourists and photographers flocking to the area specifically to see the unusual lighting display
