South Yorkshire Police have reported that an 18-year-old man has died after crashing his black Ford Fiesta into a wall during a police pursuit in Sheffield. Police claim that the man reacted to their presence on Hyde Park Walk and “attempted to flee the scene” at around 13:00 GMT on Monday. The car was believed to have been stolen. After a short police pursuit, the car crashed into a wall on East Bank Road, and the driver was rushed to hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the fatal crash. While East Bank Road was initially closed for investigation work, it has now been reopened. Sheffield police have issued an appeal to anyone who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage from the scene at the time of the crash to come forward.
They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have been in the City Road, Park Grange Road, Spring Lane and Northern Avenue areas during the pursuit. A police spokesperson also stated that anyone with information about the incident should get in touch.
With the police pursuit resulting in the driver’s death, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, an external organisation independent of the police, will be responsible for examining the actions of the officers involved in the chase. The incident will also be investigated internally by South Yorkshire Police
