Ayodele Jambgadi, a 28-year-old man from Ilford, has been charged with murder after the death of Jorge Ortega, an Elizabeth line worker, at Ilford station in east London. Ortega was taken to hospital on 4 December with serious head injuries and died two days later. Jambgadi has also been charged with affray, and his previous accusation of grievous bodily harm has been amended, according to the British Transport Police (BTP).
Jambgadi will appear at Inner London Crown Court on 7 January.
The death has prompted controversy over the safety of Elizabeth line workers, following a catalogue of similar incidents. Last month Tim Woodward, an engineer, died after a concrete block fell on him at Paddington station, whilst in June another worker, Rene Tkacik, died after being hit by falling debris at a Crossrail site in Holborn.
The tragedies have raised tensions between construction workers and Crossrail management over safety procedures on the project. Crossrail, which has repeatedly said that 2018 will see construction of an expanded Elizabeth line completed, has also been affected by delays caused by the controversial installation of 3,000 concrete plinths
