Southport riots: Viral bricking video rioter jailed


Brian Spencer, who became infamous for being hit by bricks during the Southport riot, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after admitting to charges of violent disorder and racially aggravated harassment. The viral video showed the 40-year-old being hit in the head and crotch by bricks thrown by other rioters as he taunted a line of police on July 30, 2021. Spencer was also seen throwing wheelie bins and punching a police vehicle during the protest.

The riot broke out a day after three girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport, and police said Spencer’s injuries were caused by “some wayward missiles” thrown during the “appalling scenes”. According to police spokesperson, Spencer was seen with a large group of people standing in front of police officers and throwing bricks. The spokesperson added that the man could be seen acting aggressively.

Spencer had also racially abused another patient at the hospital where he was receiving treatment for his injuries caused during the riot, and officers were called after recognizing him from the viral social media footage. Merseyside Police detective Inspector Paula Jones has called the scenes “despicable” and noted that “Spencer was involved in the violence and will now spend a significant amount of time in prison.”

Spencer has now been sentenced to two and a half years in jail after pleading guilty to violent disorder and racially aggravated harassment. He has been described by authorities as a violent rioter and a danger to the public
