Italian dancer Giovanni Pernice has won the Italian version of Strictly Come Dancing, Ballando Con Le Stelle, alongside partner Bianca Guaccero. The pair performed a range of dances including the Argentine Tango and the Charleston. Pernice described the victory, which comes months after he was the subject of a BBC internal investigation into allegations of harassment and verbal bullying made against him by his former Strictly partner Amanda Abbington, as a “dream”.
The BBC upheld complaints against Pernice earlier this year, although it cleared the dancer of allegations of physical aggression. Pernice, who thanked UK fans for their support on Instagram, was replaced on the most recent UK series of Strictly. Abbington, who played Mary Morstan in TV series Sherlock, later said she had “no regrets” about making the complaints, adding that she felt vindicated.
Pernice had previously denied the allegations, describing himself as a “strict teacher” but not a bully. In an interview with the BBC, he said that frustration was common among both professional dancers and contestants on the show.
He and Guaccero, an actress and singer, recently confirmed that they are in a romantic relationship.
