Netley: Teenager who died after stabbing named by police

Police have named the victim of a fatal stabbing in Netley as 19-year-old Tawana Choruma. The teenager was discovered with serious injuries on Station Road shortly before 6:30 pm on Wednesday and died at the scene. Three 18-year-old men from the Southampton area have been arrested on suspicion of murder, with one of the men also being arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property. Hampshire Police have stated that Tawana’s family is receiving support from specialist officers.
A 36-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, but no further action was taken for this offence. However, she was later arrested for possessing a class-B drug with intent to supply and possessing an imitation firearm to cause fear of violence. She was released on bail while investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, the authorities are urging residents to check their bins for a discarded mobile phone that might relate to the incident.
This stabbing comes after a rise of violence and knife crimes in the UK. In recent years, the government has implemented several initiatives to curb such offenses. One such measure has been the deployment of knife detection technology in some areas. The hope is that this approach will reduce the number of dangerous weapons carried in public and ultimately lower the number of knife-related incidents. Regardless of official measures, each loss of life to knife crime is a tragedy, with devastating consequences for victims’ families and loved ones.
As the investigation of Tawana’s terrible death continues, the authorities are appealing to the locals to come forward with any information they may have concerning the incident. Police officers are encouraging people to search their bins for any discarded mobile phones. They emphasise that such an item could prove crucial evidence that could help their investigation into Tawana’s death.
