Doctor Who: Final black and white adventure to air in colour

A team of fans, led by Rich Tipple, has colourised the 1969 Doctor Who episode, The War Games, marking the end of the Second Doctor era. The 10-episode epic, which was the final curtain call for actor Patrick Troughton, will be broadcast as a 90-minute film on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer on Monday. Tipple and his team also worked on the colourisation of the original Dalek story in 2023. The new version will include never-before-seen footage of the Second Doctor’s regeneration into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee).

Tipple, who is the lead colourisation artist for the project, said that “making this in colour is a chance to open it up to a whole new audience who can now appreciate how good the 1960s golden era of Doctor Who was”. The War Games was filmed extensively in East Sussex locations including Brighton, Cuckmere and Birling Gap. Tipple said that “it was a joy to work on something that had such amazing links to where I’m from. It was magic to be able to turn locations that I’m so familiar with into vibrant colour”.

Russell T Davies, Doctor Who showrunner, commented that “from the day I arrived back on Doctor Who, this was the plan – to colourise old stories and bring them back to life. It looks so vivid and new”. The episode saw the first appearance of the Doctor’s race, the Time Lords. It has also been revealed that Tipple and his team spent 12 months working on the project, and some previously unseen footage has been included.

The aim of the project is to introduce a new audience to the 1960s golden era of Doctor Who, which some people find black and white a barrier to watch. Tipple’s team have been praised for their attention to detail, which has allowed the team to produce such a quality result. The War Games will air on Monday at 21:00 GMT on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer
