Doctor Who's Russell T Davies gets his ideas by brushing his teeth

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed the secret to his success in coming up with ideas. The 61-year-old writer shared that one of his daily routines is to brush his teeth, and he believes this activity helps his subconscious mind click into place. Davies compared this process to the game Wordle, where leaving something for a while and then coming back can help an idea form. He also shared that he has thought of entire shows while brushing his teeth.

When it comes to putting pen to paper, Davies prefers to lock himself away and avoid the distractions of writing in public spaces. Although Doctor Who has been on TV screens for almost 20 years, he still gets nervous ahead of broadcasts. The latest Christmas episode, “Joy to the World,” will air on BBC One on Christmas Day, and Nicola Coughlan, known for her appearances in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, will play The Doctor’s companion.

Davies is also working on a Doctor Who spin-off series called The War Between the Land and the Sea. The show will not include The Doctor’s character; instead, it features Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the lead roles. The plot revolves around an ancient species that emerges from the ocean, causing an international crisis. Davies believes the show’s premise is timely as the impact of human actions on the environment, including the oceans, becomes increasingly apparent.

Despite his experience as a writer, Davies admitted he still feels pressure to create new and exciting content. He said that the challenge of coming up with new ideas and making an impact was a “great fuel to the engine,” especially for anyone working in the creative industry. With his upcoming spin-off series and Christmas episode broadcast, the pressure is on for Davies, but his unique tooth brushing routine seems to keep his ideas flowing.

The Doctor Who Christmas special will be available on BBC One and iPlayer from 17:10 GMT on Christmas Day
