Groucho Club to reopen following alleged rape


The license for London’s The Groucho Club has been put back in motion, post the review by the licensing committee at Westminster Council. A recent alleged rape predicament had forced the private members’ club to close at the request of police following claims of a “recent serious criminal offence” that took place at the premises in Soho on 13 November. A representative for the club told the committee that they were in full support of the alleged victim and promised to work with the Met Police to make safety improvements.

Gary Grant represented the Met Police and said the force had three concerns about how the club was operating and “other serious matters” were raised in a portion of the meeting held without the press or public present. The licensing committee said new conditions agreed between the police and the Groucho management meant the club could reopen with a limit to members inviting only four guests at any given time on the premises. They are to be accompanied by club members at all times.

A 34-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at The Groucho Club was later bailed out until February. Among the conditions ordered by the committee will be customer toilets checking every 30 minutes. Committee chair, Aziz Toki, said the conditions were “appropriate and proportionate” and said the club could reopen once they had met all requirements. A “unique institution,” as stated by Helen Lederer, Groucho member for over 30 years, the club is a renowned establishment both in London and worldwide
