Why has Luton station waited 18 years for lifts?


Passengers using Luton railway station have been promised lifts for almost two decades but have yet to receive them. The Bedfordshire station, which was named among England’s 10 worst stations in 2009, still lacks lifts, meaning that most passengers still have to climb flights of stairs to reach the platforms. As a wheelchair user, Karen James has osteoarthritis in her back and fibromyalgia which causes chronic fatigue, brain fog, and dizziness. She said she would need about 20 minutes to walk up the stairs, with her husband carrying her wheelchair.

Network Rail acknowledges the delays and says they understand “how frustrating the delays are” but they have not confirmed how long it would take to implement the costly project. In May, Karen James moved away from Luton, where she had lived all her life, as she found the continued lack of lifts too distressing. Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson criticised the wait as “ridiculous” and “completely unacceptable”.
