Max George, former star of boy band The Wanted, has revealed that he requires surgery for a heart condition sooner than originally expected. The singer, who was taken to the hospital on Wednesday, has been diagnosed with a “2:1 block in my heart” which causes the heart to slow down or beat abnormally due to an issue with electrical impulses. George posted a message on Instagram on Monday, alongside a video and photos of himself in the hospital with wires attached to his chest, saying “we don’t have too much time to wait” for the surgery, which he hopes will take place before Christmas.
Despite being “a pretty scary time” George has been heartened by the “messages of support” he has received and added that they have “given me a much-needed boost”. In a separate video also posted on Sunday, George said the results of a heart scan would determine whether he needed a pacemaker, a defibrillator or a different intervention. Heart blocks are assigned first, second or third-degree grades depending on their severity.

In 2014, The Wanted announced a break and in 2022 George and Kaneswaran relaunched as a duo. Until his diagnosis, George was relatively healthy in comparison to his former bandmate Parker, who passed away aged 33 from brain cancer in March 2022.
Although still understandably anxious, George keeps a sense of humour by referencing last weekend’s Manchester City-Manchester United football game when he admits that “feeling OK tonight” and adding “The City game didn’t help much”
