Colin Wright, the leader of an organized crime group’s Scottish branch that ran an amphetamine lab, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. After his accomplices were apprehended during a National Crime Agency (NCA) operation in March 2021, Wright fled to Murcia, Spain, to avoid detention. Wright actively used his position of power to engage in heroin and cocaine trafficking.
Wright established an amphetamine lab that could generate up to 1,000kg of amphetamine in Motherwell, Scotland, in March 2020, following the first Covid lockdown. He aided in the transfer of at least 20kg of cocaine and 10kg of heroin between Motherwell and Merseyside.
Wright was found guilty of five drug-related criminal offenses at Liverpool Crown Court last month. He is the last member of the gang to be imprisoned, with six others already serving jail terms.
According to NCA Branch Commander Cat McHugh, Wright’s sentencing serves as a warning to criminals who seek refuge abroad and demonstrates that law enforcement officials will always be able to bring them to justice. McHugh praised the NCA’s efforts in dismantling the organized crime group, which posed a significant danger to communities in Scotland and Merseyside, with the drugs they traded contributing to crime and exploitation
