The driver of a bus in Glasgow, Scotland is in critical condition after taking a wrong turn and crashing into a railway bridge. The incident occurred on Saturday evening and led to the bus becoming wedged under the bridge. Five other men and one woman were hospitalised with minor injuries, but were later discharged. Four others were checked at the scene and the driver was unharmed. An investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
Last year, 10 individuals were hospitalised after a bus struck the same railway bridge. The area surrounding the bridge was temporarily closed following the collision, but has since reopened. Services on various railway lines were briefly halted. First Bus, the company who owns the bus, said it is cooperating with officials handling the case.
Network Rail further emphasised the importance of preventing such accidents, referring to them as “entirely preventable” and declaring that they result in costly disruptions and cancellations to train services. The rail company urged drivers to consider the height and size of their vehicles, along with potential loads, and to carefully map out their routes in order to avoid any potential accidents that could endanger infrastructure.
It is unclear as to whether this specific bus or driver had been involved in prior accidents of a similar nature. While the driver remains unnamed, updates on his condition are being closely monitored by the public. The accident has highlighted concerns about the safety of bus transit in the city and has generated controversy surrounding whether or not more must be done in order to avoid future collision incidents
