Body found in search for missing Cairngorms skier

After going skiing alone in the Cairngorms, a body has been found during the search for missing skier Sam Burns.

The 40-year-old was in contact with friends when he set off on his solo skiing expedition, planning to ski Y Gulley or Diagonal Gulley from the Cairngorm Plateau. However, when he failed to return to his parked van at the mountain car park in Aviemore, police were notified.

After police launched a search, a body was found on Saturday. Formal identification is yet to take place; however, Mr. Burns’s family has already been informed. Police have confirmed that no suspicious circumstances were observed and will submit a report to the procurator fiscal.

The Cairngorms is one of Scotland’s most popular spots for skiing, offering vast ski slopes on the mountain range, allowing skiers to reach high altitudes of around 4,000ft. Due to its popularity, the area can also pose many unique dangers, like going out skiing alone and underestimating the complexity of the mountain range.

Police forces have now appealed to ski enthusiasts to always take precautions before going skiing, to ensure that they don’t become an unfortunate victim of unpredictable mountain ranges.
