Strictly Come Dancing: Four celebrities gear up for grand final

In the running for the coveted glitterball trophy are four celebrities who have made it through weeks of fierce competition on Strictly Come Dancing. Among the finalists is Chris McCausland who, as the first blind contestant on the show, is generating a lot of excitement and is the bookies’ favourite to win. The grand final will be screened on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday from 18:00 GMT. The remaining contestants are JB Gill, Sarah Hadland and Tasha Ghouri.

McCausland spoke of the challenges of the competition and his pride in having achieved so much. “It’s been exhausting, and it’s been the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but I think it’s certainly been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” he said. His 11-year-old daughter has been backing him since the start of the show, telling him even if he goes out, he has already won.

Among Hadland’s many fans are those who admire her advocacy of women believing in themselves and not setting limits on what they can achieve. She reflected that she had learned not to put limits on herself, “You shouldn’t ever reach a point in your life for whatever reason, that you say, ‘That’s me, that’s my limit’. You shouldn’t do that, because you’re stopping all these possibilities.”

The only representation of the younger generation among the finalists is Tasha Ghouri, at 26 the youngest contestant. Ghouri became the second deaf person ever to appear on the show, following Rose Ayling-Ellis who won the contest three years earlier. Talking about the support she has received from viewers of the show, Ghouri praised the power of representation and spoke of the importance of having it.

Finally, former JLS singer Gill has already come through intense dance competition to find himself in the final. He has been partnered with both Amy Dowden and Lauren Oakley in the course of the show due to the necessity of switching partners when Dowden was forced to withdraw.
