Daniel Burke: UK fighter was unlawfully killed in Ukraine, coroner rules


A former British soldier who was helping the Ukrainian army in its war against Russia was killed by a “comrade”, a coroner has found. Daniel Burke, originally from Manchester, was found to have been killed by someone he knew when he was away from the front line in August 2023. The Manchester Area Coroner, Zak Golombeck, said Burke was killed by “cowardice and dishonour” and that he “died with bravery and valour”.

The suspect in Burke’s killing is an Australian national who is wanted by Ukrainian police after leaving the country in the midst of the ongoing conflict. Abdelfetah ‘Adam’ Nourine, who is known by Greater Manchester Police under his local nickname of “Jihadi Adam”, told Ukrainian police that he had shot Burke accidentally while the two of them were practicing drills over 27 miles away from the frontline.
