Sutton Coldfield: Man jailed for murdering friend at his flat

Leroy Lawrence, 46, has been sentenced to a minimum of 26 years in prison for the murder of Craig Moult, 45, at his flat in Sutton Coldfield in September last year. Lawrence was also convicted of stealing Moult’s property and bank card. The victim reportedly sustained over 100 injuries and was left to die by his attacker. Lawrence was described as a “dangerous man” by Ch Insp Jim Mahon of West Midlands Police, who added that the defendant had demonstrated “no remorse”.

During the initial phase of the investigation, Lawrence turned himself into police and confessed to his cellmate that he had murdered his friend and stolen his property, though an attempt to use the stolen bank card failed. Upon arriving at Moult’s flat, police officers discovered that the perpetrator had captured images of his crimes on his mobile phone. Authorities believe that Lawrence may have returned to Moult’s flat after the killing to remove more property. At the same time, he was also convicted of one count of theft against an innocent woman on the day after the murder, stealing designer clothes and jewellery.

Lawrence was found guilty of these crimes and given a life sentence. The family of Craig Moult have released a statement in tribute to their son and expressing their heartbreak at the details of his murder, which they were forced to listen to throughout the trial. They stated that Craig was “still very much missed” as a son, brother, and father and did not deserve what happened to him. Commenting on the trial, a spokesperson for West Midlands police reaffirmed the force’s commitment to securing justice in violent crimes and its continued efforts to safeguard communities from the dangers of violence
