On the night of 22 September 2022, Sara was found unresponsive at home. She had suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital, where she died the next day.
The post-mortem examination found she had multiple injuries, including fractures to her ribs and collarbone, and bruising to her face, legs and back. She had also suffered a severe head injury consistent with a blow to the head.

Sharif and Batool denied the charges, but were found guilty by a jury on 14 June 2022.
