In Scotland, Lindsay MacCallum has been ordered to repay £60,000 to the charity Rainbow Valley after stealing £86,000 from the organisation between 2011 and 2022. MacCallum and Angela MacVicar founded the charity to provide emotional and physical support to those living with cancer following the death of MacVicar’s daughter in 2005. The two women had a falling out in 2022 after MacVicar discovered discrepancies in an account set up for a fundraising ball. MacCallum later pleaded guilty to two fraud charges totaling £95,483. She was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison.
A court had previously issued a confiscation order, with punitive proceeds divided between Rainbow Valley and the Anthony Nolan Trust. But the two charities instead agreed to a compensation order, and all funds will now be returned to the organizations. MacCallum has already repaid £25,000 she stole from MacVicar.
According to MacVicar, the impending return of the stolen funds will be “wonderful” for her charity, which has 200 people on its waiting list. She said, “The charity will survive and thrive now that we’re getting it back.” However, MacVicar lamented that the decision does not compensate for the hurt caused by her former friend.
MacCallum has been given until March to come up with the remaining £60,000 and repay it. If she meets the deadline, Crown court action under the Proceeds of Crime Act will be withdrawn. Regarding the repayment, Advocate Sarah Loosemore said, “The best place for this money is for it to go back to the charities.”
