Thousands without power in Northern Ireland after Storm Darragh

Thousands of households in Northern Ireland remain without power after Storm Darragh, with community assistance centres set to open in response. NIE Networks reported that nearly 95,000 households were affected during the storm, and about 12,000 remain without power. It may take several days for NIE Networks to fully restore electricity. The energy provider has deployed 600 staff members and is seeking additional personnel from across the UK.

Although most of the faults affecting a high number of customers have been repaired, there are still around 1,200 faults across the network, some affecting only small numbers of customers. NIE Networks operations manager Alex Houston anticipates it will take some time to rectify all faults.

Community assistance centres will open today: leisure centres across Northern Ireland will offer warm drinks, charging facilities and changing facilities for those without home power. NIE Networks staff will offer support and answer queries at the centres, with the Red Cross also offering support on the ground.

Storm Darragh is the fourth named storm of the season, following Ashley, Bert, and Conall in Northern Ireland. Gusts recorded around Northern Ireland included 78mph (126km/h) at Orlock Head, County Down, and 71mph (114km/h) at Killowen, County Down. Around 400,000 homes and businesses were left without power in Ireland; ESB Networks stated a “significant number” of these could remain without supply for days in the wake of the damage caused.

Several festive events were cancelled across the region, and all six Irish Premiership games had to be cancelled also. At its height, there were no running trains in Northern Ireland, while ferry, flight, and bus services were also delayed. Road closures remain numerous, and road users are being advised to plan their journeys in advance.

Anyone needing to report faults or emergencies for electricity, housing, gas, flooding or water in Northern Ireland should contact NIE Networks, Openreach, gas networks, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, NI Water, or the Flooding Incident Line. Road closures and other updates can be found on the Traffic Watch NI website. For the latest weather information, check the Met Office or BBC weather websites
